Architecture, beauty, creativity and utility. How they improve the human experience.

Architecture binds together beauty with creativity and utility; evoking emotions and improving the human experience. The great architect, Renzo Piano formulated in his TED talk that architecture is many things; those including beauty, necessity, emotions and creativity. We can see these elements implemented in not only his projects, but also in ordinary life as we take a look at museums (Museo Menil, Houston), public plazas, theaters, cultural buildings (Stone Thermal Baths by Peter Zumthor) , and buildings of that nature. The two propositions previously presented are intrinsically linked to through the elements stated in the beginning of this post.

Beauty is one of the elements that each individual holds dear and finds value throughout. In this case, when referring to architecture, the ability of beauty in buildings to change the mood in positive way is evident. Imagine having the pleasure of waking up every day and to walk out to your surrounding architecture and finding pleasure by appreciating not only the beauty of architecture but also its other elements. One of these is creativity, as one can course through the mind of the builder. Utility and necessity, as it serves a purpose. All these elements together, link up in the form of architecture to better the human experience.

Traversing more into the specifics of why architecture evokes all these elements previously stated, looking into museums, open plazas, theaters; building of this nature allow for the improvement of the human experience. This is done by these buildings giving rise to emotions of community, belonging and aesthetics. One of these building is the stone thermal baths by Peter Zumthor which link beauty through emotion and utility. Another example, is the

Museo Menil in Houston by Renzo Piano which give rise to that sense of community through the exposure of beauty of the crafts presented in the building and by the building.

To further explain the relationship of the prepositions presented, one could consider that these elements previously stated are interchangeable. Beauty can evoke emotion and a sense of belonging. Utility can give rise to belonging and appreciation that can lead to beauty by the fulfilment of purpose. In other words, these elements complement each other, while also having the ability to give rise to each other. Architecture function as a platform in which these elements are made evident to the human experience.
