Style, decoration, and ornament. How they impact the field of Architecture.

The concepts of style, decor, and ornament have significant impacts in the field of architecture. These three concepts give rise to interesting points of view to appreciate and draw inspiration from an architectural point of view. Style, decor, and ornament contain definitions that evoke a spark in the creative development of an architect and, by the study of history, the further understanding of the concepts. These two previous propositions suggest the significant influence that the latter concepts have on the field of architecture.

Style transforms itself into a synonym of “writing”, in other words it is a form of literary expression. (Isado, 2023). In Architecture, it represents a way of making a structure visually interesting and captivating towards the viewer, as a reader is captivated by the writing of a poet or story teller. Decoration symbolizes or represents order and beauty. (Isado, 2023). Style gives rise to decor and as style changes throughout the passing of time so does the way one decors in a particular style. Ornament is repetitive instances of a particular décor element. (Isado, 2023).  We can visualize this concept in clothing, as fashion houses create unique patterns with their logos. Another way of visualizing these three concepts at work in architecture is that these concepts jointly can give rise to a signature “mark’ or “patent” that identifies that individual at work.

Style, décor, and ornament are concepts that help a developing architect in its stride to professionalism. The variation of these concepts through time gives rise to the inspiration of an architect’s unique design philosophy to create something new, not necessarily copying piece by piece. It can also help an architect to appreciate the beginnings of architecture and even adopt some of these designs into the contemporary era depending on the project. Knowing the genesis of these concepts can also help a developing architect to learn from the mistakes of past architects, as the field in its early stages wasn’t as robust as it is today. That is not to negate, the very impressive architectural projects of the past, but rather recognize that the tools that architects have in today’s technological era are to be taken full advantage of as we strive to become the best architect one is able to be.

The concepts of style, decor, and ornament have significant impacts in the field of architecture. More specifically, it has an effect on the creative development of an architect’s design language. An architect’s unique design language mixed with the history of the three concepts explained previously gives rise to an interesting view. It equips and encourages the developing architect to immerse itself into a unique source of inspiration. This inspiration gathers concepts from the past and present that allow the architect in formation to become unique in its design language.
